Before European and American settlers came to what is now Portland, the Upper Chinook, Multnomah, and other Native American tribes lived in the area. Settlers from the Eastern United States first came to the area via the Oregon Trail in the early to mid-1800s, and the city of Portland was incorporated in 1851. Portland’s population ballooned to over 200,000 people by 1910, and to over 350,000 people by 1945.
Today, about 2,300,000 people live in the Portland metro area. The mild climate is ideal for growing roses, which has earned Portland the nickname “City of Roses.” Many large companies have headquarters in and around Portland, including Nike, Intel, and Adidas.
